How to Map Your Subdomain with WordPress

WordPress is the most popular Content Management System (CMS) used for creating websites. WordPress free users are able to publish their website to a free .wordpress.com subdomain name where the following website address is created username.wordpress.com.

If you’ve registered a domain with Vodien, you can easily connect it to your WordPress website by reading our guide on How to Map Your Domain with WordPress.

However, if you only wish to connect your WordPress website to a subdomain of your Vodien registered domain, e.g. site.mydmain.com, you need to do two things:

Step 1: Add or edit your CName Records
Step 2: Map your Vodien subdomain

Important: If you haven’t created a subdomain of your Vodien registered domain name yet, you may visit our guide on How to Create a Subdomain first, before proceeding with the instructions on this guide.

Step 1: Add or Edit Your CName Records

The concept is simple. At this point, you will have two subdomains with the following scenarios:

  1. username.wordpress.com – which is currently connected to your WordPress website.
  2. site.mydomain.com – which is currently with Vodien and you wish to use for your WordPress website.

Adding a CName Record for “site.mydomain.com” via your Vodien Account Manager or Hosting Manager will allow you to point the subdomain to your WordPress website. Follow the guide below for how you can add/edit your CName Record:

If via Account Manager
  1. Log In to the Account Manager.
  2. Click Domains from the top menu.
  3. Click on the Domain Name that you wish to manage. This should be the domain you used to create your subdomain.
If you only have one domain, you will automatically be routed to its management page.
  4. Scroll down to the External Editor DNS section, then click the Manage DNS button.
(Make sure to allow pop-ups for the Vodien website on your browser.)
  5. Add or edit your CName Record as follows:

    Add a new CName Record:

    a. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, click Select record type to add, click CNAME, then click Add.

    b. In the “example.vodien.com” field, enter your Vodien subdomain, e.g. site.mydomain.com. In the field below that, enter your WordPress subdomain, e.g. username.wordpress.com.

    c. Click Update to save.

    Edit a CName Record:

    a. Scroll through the list to look for your current subdomain.
    b. Replace the value in the box below your Vodien subdomain. The new value should be your WordPress subdomain: e.g. username.wordpress.com.
    c. Click on the Update button at the bottom of the page.

If via Hosting Manager
  1. Log in to the cPanel using this link format: http://yourdomain.com/cpanel/
(Replace yourdomain.com with the Main Domain Name connected to your Vodien hosting.)
  2. Scroll down to the Domains panel, and click on the Zone Editor icon.
  3. Look for the Domain Name that you wish to manage. This should be the domain you used to create your subdomain.
  4. Add or edit your CName Record as follows:

Add a CName via quick access:

    a. Click on the CNAME Record link that corresponds to your domain.

    b. Enter your Vodien subdomain under Name and your WordPress subdomain under CNAME, then click Add a CNAME Record to save. (Please make sure you include the “dot” at the end of both subdomains.)

Add a CName via Manage link:

    a. Click on the Manage link that corresponds to your domain.

    b. Click on the [v] Arrow Icon beside Add Record at the top and select Add CNAME Record.

    c. Enter your Vodien subdomain in the Valid zone name field and enter your WordPress subdomain in the Fully qualified domain name field, then click Add Record. (Please make sure you include the “dot” at the end of both subdomains.)

Edit a CName via Manage link:
    a. Scroll through the list to look for your current subdomain.
    b. Click on its corresponding Edit link.

    c. Replace the record value with your WordPress subdomain: e.g. username.wordpress.com., then click Save Record. (Please make sure you include the “dot” at the end of the subdomain.)

NOTE: After adding the DNS Records, please allow 2-4 hours for the whole internet to cache the correct information. This applies to changes done on both the Account Manager and the Hosting Manager or cPanel.

Step 2: Map Your Vodien Subdomain
